Ordered a Bluetooth ODB2 dinger and the original delivery dated was this Friday, now it’s tomorrow. Sweet! Also a BMW specifical ODB app that may or may not have been a total rip off. We’ll have to wait and see on that one.

There are cheaper ones...that don’t support iOS.

I’m still not 100% sure how it all works , but f rom what I gather , it sounds like the cheap ~ $1 0   dongles and free apps only let you read certain data streams and clear codes. But i f you want full communication with the car’s module(s), you need a specialized dongle and the right software (which is more than just a free app).

I’m probably something but what do you mean on full communication?

Edit: I watched a clip from their site on what it can do. D sh C ommand and Torque accomplishes the as BlueDrive for a 1/10 the cost. The only thing missing from Dsh Command is possible reasons that can the issue, but Google is free.

That price seems pretty steep. Does it include the software?  I’ve been using a $10 wifi OBD reader on my BMWs along with the Carly app on my iPhone for four years now. I’ve diagnosed codes, programed functions and registered batteries with no issues.

Guess I’ve been hoodwinked by Amazons suggestion.

I use a $10 wifi dongle and the $50 Carly app and can read /delete codes, datalog, program various  functions and register batteries.

I think I’m $70 all in with the software and hardware, but I bought the software when it first came out. I’m sure the price has risen, so maybe you aren’t too far off.

A real scan tool is a much more powerful tool than your average code reader. Depending on the vehicle, you can read all sorts of different data, and even send commands to the car to do things like target specific solenoids and stuff for step-by-step diagnosis.

I’ve been looking for a way to turn my tablet into a full-feature scan tool, if that’s possible. Unfortunately, I haven’t invested a lot of time and money into this topic to see for myself, since both of my vehicles are pre-OBDII. But it’s something that I’d like to have on-hand for working on newer cars, be they friends and family cars, or if I end up driving something newer some day.

I did get a cheap dongle, but have yet to find an app that can read all the things a real scan tool can read. As near as I can figure, it appears to be both a software limitation   and a hardware limitation. Recently, I’ve been looking at the OBDLink line of dongles. I’m not sure what’s different between them, but the OBDLink MX appears to be a similar product to the Bluedriver, which claims to offer “all the capabilities of an expensive handheld scan tool”.

Yeah the software/app for this one is free.

I would just make sure it lets you program batteries. The dealerships charge $75-150, so any app/dongle that you have to drop coin on should have this function.

That sounds interesting. I haven’t found an app for my ELM327 Bluetooth dongle that will let me do any programming or battery stuff. I’m s till trying to figure out if it’s the dongle, app, or both that are holding me back. Unfortunately, $50 is more than I’m willing to experiment with. If I’m going to spend that kind of money, I really need to be sure about  its capabilities.

You have an E90, right? They have a “smart” alternator which charges the battery according to its age. When you replace a battery you have to communicate that to the alternator, otherwise it will overcharge it and possibly cause issues. That’s why deale rships charge something like $400 for a battery replacement. If you can register the battery yourself, then you can buy an aftermarket AGM battery for around $200 and save coin on having the dealer register it for you. Welcome to the world of modern BMW ownership! The Carly app paid for itself on my first battery replacement.

Yeah, I can program window functions, blinkers, lights, door locks, side mirrors, exhaust flaps, chimes...etc. It pulls up something like 8-10 hard drives when I read codes. Gives me the code number and code description (in German). Even lets you fool with EGR codes on the diesels (for now). It’s a BMW specific app. The guy who designed it is in Germany, so I think he worked for BMW. I got it because it lets me register batteries. Paid for itself on my first battery replacement.

The idea was to get as much life out of the battery as possible while still allowing all the electronic goodies to function well. To their credit, this is the most hi tech car I’ve ever owned, and it’s battery lasted a good two years longer than they usually do for me.

It’s not just a German thing, either. Pretty sure my dad’s Silverado has the same deal, but his battery lasted half as long as mine.

That’s great!

One of my brothers has a newer Focus that we put a battery in, and I found out about the battery reset thing after the fact . T he dealer wants $110 to perform the reset. I figure that if I can find the right dongle/app to do the job , maybe my brother will opt to pay for that instead of paying the dealer for a one-time service .

On a Focus the biggest detriment will probably be shortened battery life.
